About Mouse Records
In late 1990, label founder Roy Ong published a monthly black-and-white photocopy style music fanzine, Mega Z. The fanzine features interview with local musicians and review of demo and gigs. On its 1st anniversary issue, Roy gathered six local bands and released the compilation album, Made In Singapore (M.I.S.), on cassette tapes which was sold with the fanzine. The response was overwhelming. Roy realised what the local music and bands’ supporters wanted most is to hear them rather than just read about them. Back then, there were only a handful of recording studios and album releases were rare. With that in mind, Roy folded the fanzine and started Mouse Records in early 1992.
Mouse Records continues to release M.I.S. Vol. 2 and 3 with more bands featured in each album. Gigs were also organised to give these bands an opportunities to perform. The label was inactive between 1994 and 1995 when Roy was enlisted into National Service. After completing his service in the army, Roy formally registered Mouse Records as a record label, music publisher, events management and design firm.
In 1997, Mouse Records released Singapore’s first Chinese rock compilation album, 破岩石 破岩时. Local Chinese bands were almost unheard of. The album raised many eye-brows from the local public, media and especially veterans from the Mandarin-pop music scene. Like it or not, Mouse Records’ hardcore DIY spirit moves on to produce more albums for local Chinese bands.
Since then, the label has produced successful albums for band like Chou Pi Jiang 臭皮匠 and hip hop group TripleNoize. More gigs showcasing regional and local artists were staged. The independent spirit of Mouse Records live on.
